My first impression of 4 Winds Estate can be summed up in one word: breathtaking. The setting was immediately captivating. The Palisades rise dramatically behind the house, creating a backdrop that is difficult to forget once you have experienced it. Combined with the views across the valley and the privacy of the property, those rock formations gave the estate a sense of place that felt entirely its own. Even after spending years here, that landscape remains one of the things I appreciate most.
My connection to 4 Winds, however, goes beyond its natural beauty. It is tied to my family, the work we have put into the property, and the memories Maura and I have created here.
Carrying Forward a Family Vision
My mother, Jane, established the original vision for 4 Winds Estate. She worked with architect James Gibson to create a home inspired by Provence, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and materials that would give the residence warmth and character. Details such as reclaimed French hardwood floors, custom moldings, plasterwork, and mantels contribute to a home that feels established within its surroundings rather than separate from them.
My role has been to carry that vision forward while making my own contributions to the estate. In 2018, I personally oversaw the rebuilding of the guest house and the complete renovation of the caretaker’s house. That same year, I led the planning and development of the vineyard. Watching that vineyard mature has become one of the most rewarding parts of my experience here. Like so much about 4 Winds, it reinforces the idea that the most meaningful improvements to a property often take patience.
Caring for More Than the Home
Over time, I have come to believe that caring for an estate like this means looking beyond the buildings. The surrounding land deserves the same attention. I implemented a land management program that included securing USDA grants, removing invasive plants, replanting native California grasses, and introducing goats and cattle for managed grazing. These efforts help reduce wildfire fuel while supporting the long term health of the land and its ecosystems.
Land stewardship has changed the way I experience 4 Winds. When you spend enough time walking a property, watching its seasons, tending its vines, and understanding its challenges, you develop a responsibility toward it. You begin thinking not only about what the land provides today, but what condition it will be in years from now.
That relationship with the outdoors shapes everyday life here. Mornings often start with Maura and me walking the dogs and checking on the vineyard, gardens, and animals. The season determines much of the rhythm. Harvest brings activity and anticipation, while other parts of the year are quieter, with more attention given to tending the vines and caring for the property.
By evening, life naturally moves toward the patios, terraces, and gardens. We might share a meal outside, spend time with friends, or simply enjoy the views. There is an easy movement between the house and the landscape that has become part of our routine.
A Place for the People We Love
As much as I value the privacy of 4 Winds, some of my best memories involve filling it with people. The estate has a wonderful ability to bring family and friends together while still giving everyone room to find a quiet corner of their own. The house, gardens, and outdoor spaces make gathering feel natural rather than formal. No memory captures that better for me than marrying the love of my life, Maura, here.
We held our wedding ceremony in the private garden behind the primary bedroom of the main house. The garden setting was perfect for incorporating personal details and touches inspired by nature that felt at home within the surrounding landscape. Afterward, we gathered for dinner on the patio. One of our favorite bands from New Orleans came out to play for us, and we celebrated surrounded by family and friends.
Having the people we loved, the music we loved, and this remarkable landscape together made the day unforgettable. That wedding also changed my relationship with the property. 4 Winds was already a place my family had invested tremendous care in, but it became part of Maura's and my story as well. Certain parts of the estate now hold memories that cannot be separated from the landscape itself.
Finding a Sense of Belonging
The formal gardens near the house and the rugged landscape beyond them give 4 Winds two distinct but complementary personalities. There is refinement close to home and a sense of openness as you move farther onto the land. The vineyard connects the two, adding another element that changes with the seasons.
Privacy has also shaped our experience. There is a genuine sense of retreat here, but never isolation. The views continually reconnect you with the wider Napa Valley landscape. The Palisades, surrounding hills, vineyard, gardens, and open land are always present.
Over the years, I have learned that a home becomes meaningful through more than architecture or acreage. It is shaped by ordinary mornings, long term projects, celebrations, meals outside, changing seasons, and the people who share those experiences with you.
That is what 4 Winds Estate has become for me.
It is a place where I have been able to continue my mother's vision while leaving my own mark through the vineyard, residences, and stewardship of the land. It is where Maura and I were married and where we have built countless quieter memories together.
Eventually, every property like this enters a new chapter. My hope is that the next owner will appreciate the architecture, gardens, vineyard, privacy, and natural setting, but also make 4 Winds distinctly their own. There are countless ways to live here and to develop a personal relationship with the land.
For me, that relationship has grown stronger with time. The more I have cared for 4 Winds, the more it has become a part of my life. And ultimately, I think that sense of belonging is what makes this place so difficult to describe and so easy to love.
